Words printed in italics were supplied by the translators to complete the sense in English; they have no corresponding word in the Hebrew or Greek. The King James translators marked them honestly, so that any reader could see exactly what had been added — and they are preserved here for the same reason.
If you have never read the Bible through, do not start at Genesis and try to read straight on — that is where most attempts fail. Begin with the Gospel of John, which was written expressly so that readers might believe. Then the other Gospels, then Acts, then Romans. Alongside that, a psalm and a chapter of Proverbs most days. We hold to the King James Bible in English and the Ostervald in French, because both rest on the same received text, handed down and preserved through the centuries, and both render the Word of God without weakening it.
