“Let all things be done decently and in order.”

This site uses the smallest number of cookies we could manage while still remembering how you like to read. Nothing here advertises to you, follows you to another site, or is sold to anybody.
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that something can be remembered between one page and the next. Related technologies — local storage and session storage — do the same job, and everything said here applies to those too. On this site we use local storage rather than true cookies, because it keeps the information on your device instead of sending it to a server with every request.
| Name | Purpose | Kind | Life |
|---|---|---|---|
bbc_fontscale | Remembers the text size you selected, so you do not have to set it on every page. | Strictly necessary | Until you clear it |
bbc_consent | Records the cookie choice you made here, so we do not ask again on every visit — and so we can prove what you consented to. | Strictly necessary | 12 months |
That is the complete list at the date above. If it ever grows, this table will be updated before the change goes live.
These make the site work: your language, your text size, and the record of your own consent choice. They are held on your device and never transmitted to us. They cannot be switched off, because without them the site cannot do what you asked it to do. Under Quebec and Canadian law, consent is not required for these.
Non-essential comfort settings remembered between visits. Off unless you turn them on.
If we ever wish to know which articles are being read, we would count page views anonymously and in aggregate. It would never profile you, never follow you to another site, and never be sold or shared for advertising. At the date above we run no measurement of any kind; the option exists so that consent is asked before anything is introduced, not afterwards.
When you first arrive you are asked to choose, and refusing is exactly as easy as accepting — one button either way, with no dark patterns, no pre-ticked boxes, and no penalty for declining. The site works identically whichever you choose.
To change your decision at any time, use in the footer of any page. You may also clear site data in your browser, which erases everything we have stored and causes the question to be asked afresh.
Every major browser lets you view, block and delete stored data, usually under Privacy or Site settings. Blocking storage for this site is entirely permissible — you will simply have to set your text size again on each visit.
This site embeds no third-party content — no external fonts, no video players, no analytics services, no social widgets, no comment systems. Nothing loads from another company's server, so no other company can set anything on your device through us.
There is no contact form and no email address on this site. Any question about this policy may be raised in person with the assembly when it meets.
